There is Nothing Either Good or Bad But Thinking Makes it So Print E-mail
It's hard not to view things that happen to us as either good or bad. It's only human to view things as how they affect us personally.

If the scale goes up, that's "bad". Down is "good".

Hopefully, as we get older we start to adopt a more indifferent Zen approach to setbacks: "It's neither good nor bad. It is what it is." This attitude has helped me over the years. If we simply accept the circumstance as neither good nor bad, it can reduce a lot of stress in our lives. We can just move on.

This, of course, is easier said than done. But it's still very useful.

I was reminded that there is yet another way to look at things - one that is more empowering.

Drink Water! Print E-mail
Have you ever sat through a whole morning of "training" at work and not learned a single useful thing?

On the other side, have you ever had a 15 minute conversation with someone that was so intense with knowledge you had to grab a note pad?

I had both experiences this week. Fortunately, the training at work was 2 days long with only one morning of "waste". The conversation I had was with a gym client named Bill.

Bill works out in our gym this time of year while he's in the area during turkey hunting season. He's 60 years old and competes in body-building. He's the nicest guy you'll ever want to meet and looks - well - awesome. His recent accomplishment is winning a body-building competition for which he worked very hard on diet and exercise. I'd estimate his body-fat, post-competition, at about 10%. Here are some pics from the contest.

There are many things that are noteworthy about our conversation, and here are 2 of them:

Strength Training and Weight Gain Print E-mail
The Fay Family finished up their 7th week of weight loss with a net 0 loss.

Bekah and Barb kept up their steady decline, which was offset by my gain of 1.5 lbs.

So why the gain? Strength training. 3 weeks ago I added strength training to my exercise routine from a strictly cardio program. Every time I add strength training, I have difficulty losing the weight.

Now before you go abandoning your strength training program, hear me out. This doesn't happen to everyone. Some people can shed the pounds just as easily with or without strength training. I'm not one of these.

It's very frustrating to not lose weight when you're working so hard, but I have accepted the fact that for me it's the way it is.

Turning the Clock Back Print E-mail
The proven way to feel younger is to eat right and exercise VIGOROUSLY.

In the book Younger Next Year, the author points to vigorous exercise as the means of feeling young well into your 80's. Most people understand the "Use it or Lose it" philosophy when it comes to their health and aging, but it's not just whether you use it or lose it, it's also about intensity.

For example, I know many seniors that walk as a means to stay in shape. Walking is great exercise and I do a lot of it myself. But let's face it, it's not very vigorous.

For vigorous exercise, you need interval training.

Week 5 and a Week Off Print E-mail
For Week 5, we averaged about a 0.5% drop for the Fay Family. As Dale and Bekah get closer to their goal , we expect the losses will be less. I had another big drop of 1.5 pounds.

We all took a week off from our program. Bekah's trip to Italy and our anniversary weekend removed us from "the ranch". The focus was to have a good time, while still being sensible.

The result for Barb and me was temporary weight gain. We accept it and are back on track this week.

Learning to Like Exercise Print E-mail
Believe it or not, many people like or love to exercise. There is no feeling comparable to being physically capable. Getting your heart pumping and your body moving helps you feel alive. Then, of course, there's that "runner's high" that all people that do cardio exercise feel when endorphins get released.

If you don't like exercise, there are likely good reasons. Below are my observations over the years.

Observation #1: Those that exercise with others enjoy it more than those that exercise alone.

In my opinion, this is one of the biggest reasons that group exercise is successful. We are social creatures and enjoy being with others. Insert a common goal like weight loss and you have a team.

It doesn't have to be a group exercise class. It can be walking with someone on your lunch hour or making an appointment to meet someone at the gym.

Tony's P90X vs. Craig's Turbulence Training Print E-mail
Tony Horton's P90X has to be the best promoted fitness program EVER! You can't NOT find it on cable TV while surfing.

I did P90X a couple of years ago. I really liked several of the DVDs and still use them today. The program is not for everyone, however. In fact, for the vast majority of people, it is not the right program at all.

P90X is the 'extreme' version of the original P90. It is for the young and fit. Period.

Many people that are not suited to the program want to believe they are young and fit (that would be me) only to be very disappointed.
